We arrived at Hilo early after a rough night crossing from Maui. Being on the windward side of Hawaii the wind and waves make the ship rock. It's fine when you're in bed but the evening dinner and walks around the ship looks like a bunch of falling down drunks swaying and grabbing handrails when a swell hits.
Hilo is on the rainy side of the island and was a port where pineapple and sugar cane was shipped out. Now that both industries have left the islands the area relies on tourism. The town was kind of sleepy with only a few shops. We toured the town, watched a free Hawaiian music concert, enjoyed a great coffee at Bear's Coffee and returned to the ship for a late lunch.
